Therapies

I use these therapies to help with chronic pain from conditions like Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Arthritis, Backaches, Headaches, Injuries and other conditions.

Cymatherapy

Above: Photo of water droplet being vibrated by sound Cymatherapy.

Cymatherapy does not cure or heal; Cymatherapy supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself by providing precise combinations of frequencies that are associated with healthy tissue and organ systems. Cymatherapy assists your body to provide itself with effective and gentle relief for stress, injury, chronic pain and many other conditions. The miracle stories are endless.

MORE DETAIL ON CYMATHERAPY

Cymatherapy is a non-invasive sound therapy that helps restore the body to optimal health, balance and function. It uses advanced instruments to transmit frequencies to the body’s organs and tissues that are associated with healthy cells and healthy cell function, supporting the body’s natural healing abilities.

Cymatherapy comes from the research of Dr. Peter Guy Manners, a British osteopath who worked with several other scientists to collate the research and development of vibrational signatures. They were able to detect and record the frequencies of tissues with the help of instrumentation designed to capture the frequencies of these vibrational signatures.

Today, some scientists have shown that the human body is a dynamic energy system and that our cells, organs and tissues have their own vibratory or resonant nature. This natural, or resonant, frequency can become upset or imbalanced, leading to pain, illness or disease. These sound waves help to normalize and synchronize the cells’ frequency back to its natural healthy state of vibrational resonance.

If you have muscular discomfort for example, the energy of that muscle and the frequency of its field will have been changed by the injury or condition affecting it. Cymatherapy transmits corrective frequencies into the muscle to rebalance its energy and stimulate the body’s natural healing process.

Conventional medicine, based on the Newtonian viewpoint, approaches the body as a biomechanical system. It views the parts of the body, controlled by the brain and nervous system, as each having an individual function. This approach looks at symptoms and tries to fix the particular part of the body that has malfunctioned, often using drugs or surgery.

What is known as “energy medicine” or “vibrational medicine,” on the other hand, works from the premise that the body is made up of interpenetrating energy fields, which in turn interact with the physical and cellular systems of the body. This approach holds that; if the human beings are made of energy fields and energy systems, then by directing energy into the body we can influence and change the body’s energetic patterns, promoting a restoration of those energy patterns to their natural healthy state. Energetic therapies, such as sound therapy, do not treat the symptoms as the cause of the problem. Instead, treatment is directed at the body’s subtle energy systems and the flow of energy within and between these systems.

Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls,  Sound Healing Instruments, and Vocal Toning

Crystal Singing Bowls are made from 99.992% pure crushed quartz and heated to about 4000 degrees in a centrifugal mold.

They are available in clear or frosted bowls in a variety of sizes, ranging from 6 to 24 inches in diameter. The bowls emit a powerful, pure resonance. The larger bowls are much more reverberant, with the tone lingering longer, simply because of the size and amount of crystal.

The size of the bowl does not necessarily determine its note, although the larger bowls sound lower octaves and notes. Each bowl is tested with digital technology to identify its sound. One will have a sense of which tone "feels" most congruent with individual needs or desires. The notes C, D, E, F, G, A, B correspond with one's energy centers or chakras.

Crystal Singing Bowls remove negative and blocked energies and emotions within the physical body and chakras. They relax, re-align and balance the body, mind, heart and soul. The sounds emitted from the bowls are enchanting harmonic tones reminiscent of an angelic choir. The bowls create a feeling of peace, in a loving  and compassionate way, bringing us back into perfect balance and harmony. Negative states of mind, stress and tension, as well as daily life may cause disturbances in the natural flow of energy in and around our body’s energy systems. Energies become disrupted, causing blockages, which create dissonant vibrations as we become out of sync with our individual, unique and natural rate of vibration, and this over time may cause disease, stress, tension or disharmony to manifest.

Crystal Singing Bowls have the power and potential of both the quartz crystal with which they are made and the sound that they emit. The physical body is made up of various crystalline substances. The bones are made from a combination of collagen, which is a protein in the form of a double helix intertwined around it that forms the framework for a type of calcium phosphate crystal called “Apatite”. Apatite crystals exist throughout the body, in the skull and in our teeth. Therefore the crystal that is in our physical body, resonate with the crystal singing bowls sounds, which travels effectively in the water, which makes up more than 70% of our body, means that crystal bowls have the capacity to alter the structure of our being. These bowls re-align those parts of us that are imbalanced with the use of sound combined with crystal. This creates a vibration that will amplify and transform the healing energies, which are stored within the bowl, and work directly with the crystalline structure of the body as well as alter brain wave frequencies, allowing us to enter into the alpha-theta optimum healing frequency and also creating a balance and synchronization in the two hemispheres of the brain. (Brainwave entrainment similar to binaural beats.)

As the bowls are made of quartz crystal and the physical vehicle strongly resonates with the energy of quartz, then the crystalline and cellular structure and makeup of the human body, which is combined with the sound vibration, enables the energy to echo throughout the body’s cavities, thus creating an extremely dynamic level of harmonic response. We know through digital technology that quartz amplifies, transforms, stores, focuses, and transfers energy; this then must be true when working with crystal bowls and the body. Examples of this can be seen in digital technology used in such items as microphones, radio and television equipment, timepieces, laser tools, and computers.

Other Sound Healing Instruments

Other Sound Healing Instruments are used for their healing frequencies, vibratory resonance, and brain wave entrainment properties. Many have been used by indigenous cultures for thousands of years. These include gongs, wind chimes, water chimes, bells, specialized drums including ocean drums, tongue drums, thunder drums, harps, monochords, metallophones, and more than 60 world instruments in all.

Vocal Toning

Vocal Toning, the elongation of a note, using breath and voice, using repetition to take one into an altered state of mind.  Toning is used to get the body vibrating to its own natural resonant frequencies and restore harmony to the body. The voice is the most healing thing we have and we should never be told we should not sing or use our voice. Toning expands the body's ability to breathe deeply and helps us to release anger, fear, anxiety, jealousy, resentment, frustration, pain, and trauma.  By vibrating the paranasal cavities, larynx, and lungs it increases nitric oxide in the body, and tones the vagus nerve.** It improves sleep, helps us relax, handle stress, and helps us on a physical, mental, emotional, energetic, and spiritual level. It can help us to release traumas and blockages. Toning can also slow down our heart rate, respiration rate, and brain wave state. It can take us into an altered state of consciousness.

**There is evidence that vowel sound chanting (as distinct from singing) humming, and vocal toning, increase nitric oxide production and tone the vagus nerve. Nitric oxide production is essential for overall health because it allows blood, nutrients, and oxygen to travel to every part of your body effectively and efficiently.

The vagus nerve is stimulated via ‘sonopuncture’, particularly via the ears and voice, thus regulating internal organ functions, including digestion, heart rate, and respiratory rate, as well as promoting vasomotor activity and anti-inflammatory effects. Specific very low (sub-audible) frequencies may also be applied by full-ear headphones, combined with music.

Multiple Instruments used in Sound Healing Therapy

Vibroacoustic Treatment

The Sound Bed (Lounge, Table, Chair) is made of memory foam with powerful low frequency transducers inside of it. The chair itself acts like a speaker sending healing low frequency vibrations throughout every cell of your body. Sound chairs or tables are used in vibroacoustic therapies, which are treatment methods based on the combined effects of music and low frequency sound vibration. Auditory and vibratory stimulations are applied to the body to achieve physical and psychological results. Since the 1980's, the use of vibroacoustic equipment has spread across the globe. It is used in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, hospices, spas, centers for massage therapy, sound therapy, alternative health, yoga, physical therapy, psychiatric treatment, and by individual therapists.

Full-Body Therapy with Healing Low Frequency Vibrations

Research from many hospitals and universities has proven the stress reduction benefits of listening to relaxing music. When using a sound chair, music is not only heard through the ear, but delivered to the body directly, vibrating every part inside and out cells, muscles, tendons, and organs, as well as blood vessels, blood, nerves, spinal cord, and areas of the brain and brainstem. This opens the possibility of direct cellular stimulation and deeper whole-body response. Sound chairs transmit powerful, healing low frequencies through the body that are both relaxing and invigorating at the same time. Not only do they feel good, low frequency vibrations:

• Penetrate every cell of your body, creating a relaxation response
• Send energy through each part of the body, energizing every cell leaving you invigorated
• Create a consistent vibration in bodies and cells, counteracting chaotic frequencies that attack our bodies throughout the day (noise, electricity, cell phones, traffic, etc.)
• Harmonize the body back into its natural consistent vibrational state, creating a peace that is natural to our system
• Drive energy from cell to cell, clearing blockages and stimulating neural pathways

Psycho Acoustic Music Production Techniques

Selecting sound and music to play through the chair is very important. At “Sound Healing”, I am very particular about the music that I put through your body.

The techniques for Sound Healing music are based on information from years of research into the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual effects of sound and music., including:

• Archetypal frequencies and specific tunings harmonized with natural systems
• Musical intervals that create different states of consciousness and awareness
• Musical modes that create specific types of feelings and emotions.
• Specific melodic structures which create deep effects
• Rhythm and tempos that affect heart rate, brainwaves, breath rate, and Galvanic skin response (electrical resistance of the skin)
• Use of Binaural Beats and frequencies to entrain the brain in specific brainwave states: Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Gamma

Vibroacoustics Research and Techniques on Sound Tables

John Stuart Reid has made amazing discoveries through his research of sound frequencies using blood samples and more, working with scientists and doctors, and cutting-edge equipment. Below are some of his amazing finds:

Many of the biological mechanisms are activated by specific sound frequencies and by music, including:

  • Enhances nitric oxide (NO) production through active and passive acoustic stimulation of the nasal cavities and lungs by specific sound frequencies and music, resulting in a broad range of health benefits.

  • Nitric oxide production is essential for overall health because it allows blood, nutrients, and oxygen to travel to every part of your body effectively and efficiently.

  • Promotes pain mediation through stimulation of the body’s large A-beta fibers or A-alpha fibers in the area experiencing pain, thus causing the pain ‘gate’ to close. Also mediates pain by the ‘Descending Inhibition of Pain’ system, also referred to as the ‘top-down’ modulation of pain. Such effects can be initiated by music (or white noise) as a result of activating endogenous opioids.

  • The vagus nerve is stimulated via ‘sonopuncture’, particularly via the ears and voice, thus regulating internal organ functions, including digestion, heart rate, and respiratory rate, as well as promoting vasomotor activity and anti-inflammatory effects. Specific very low (sub-audible) frequencies may also be applied by full ear headphones, combined with music.

  • Increases the availability of oxygen binding to hemoglobin molecules by low-frequency sound pressure, thus breaking the pain-spasm-pain cycle or ‘splinting cycle’ by increasing the availability of oxygen to affected tissues.

  • Increases the availability of oxygen binding to hemoglobin molecules by low-frequency sound pressure, thus aiding tissue repair mechanisms.

  • Promotes stress reduction with a consequent reduction in blood pressure and cortisol levels, and induces a state of joy with a consequent increase in dopamine levels, leading to a proliferation of leukocytes, thus boosting immune system efficiency.

  • Stimulates the brain binaurally—by binaural beats—to create changes in brain state, with physiological benefits.

  • Stimulates cells that are ‘sleeping’ in the G0 phase, encouraging them to return to the normal cell cycle.

Clinical Research in Hospitals and Institutions:

An extraordinary discovery by the Neils Bohr Institute: Nerve impulses propagate as sound pulses (solitons)

Neurogenic pain:

Pain can also be experienced that is not a consequence of nociception, categorized as ‘neurogenic’ pain, stemming from neural circuit disconnections, and has been found to be mediated by vibratory analgesia. For example, in a study with fibromyalgia patients, positive effects were obtained with 40Hz vibro-tactile stimulation of the body.*

Another vibro-tactile study mentioned that patients with chronic pain syndromes, such as fibromyalgia, complain of widespread pain and tenderness, as well as non-refreshing sleep, cognitive dysfunction, and negative mood. In a study with 28 normal pain-free patients, 29 fibromyalgia patients, and 19 subjects with neck or back pain, a 100Hz vibrating probe effectively created analgesic mechanisms in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, including fibromyalgia.

National Institute of Health

Ongoing since 1995, the National Institutes of Health runs the most extensive program in the U.S. for vibroacoustic pain and symptom reduction, treating over 50,000 patients per year. In one study, Dr. George Patrick measured the physiological and behavioral effectiveness of these interventions with 272 patients and found over 50% experienced a reduction of both pain and symptoms. He theorizes that this pain relief is relaxation-induced. Not only that, but he believes that multiple mechanisms of the body may use music/vibration to regain healthy homeostasis.

According to studies done by George Patrick, PhD, just one sound treatment entrains about a 33 percent increase in perceived relaxation levels and a 54 percent reduction of the intensity of pain, tension, fatigue, nausea, headache, and depression.

The study shows a treatment on a sound bed provide the following:

• Slowed heart rate

• Reduced oxygen consumption

• Decreased blood pressure

• Slowed respiration rate

• Relaxed muscles

Mentally the study also showed:

• Deep relaxation

• Changed brainwave frequencies (generally slowing down from beta to alpha and alpha to theta or delta)

• Cleared the mind from anxiety

• Created a feeling of calm and peacefulness

As an additional benefit, vibroacoustics can help people learn to recognize the state of relaxation and, over time, become able to reach relaxation at will. Vibroacoustics is a great way to learn how to relax and develop relaxation as a daily habit!

Olav Skille Research

  • Olav Skille discovered Vibroacoustic Therapy to be beneficial for conditions such as asthma, autism, cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, insomnia, pain, and Parkinson’s disease, describing the three main areas of effect from Vibroacoustic Therapy as being (1) Spasmolytic and muscle-relaxing effect, (2) Increase in blood flow to the extremities, and (3) Marked but varying effects to the vegetative state.

  • In a study performed on 40 patients experiencing lumbar regional pains it was found that, after being given a VibroAcoustic Therapy session, 75% of participants experienced a complete dissolution of pain while 10% experienced a significant decrease in it.

  • It’s been found that sound bed treatments can lead to a significant decrease in muscle spasms in just about any part of the body. How could you not smile after one?

  • In a study that took 32 individuals in the same workspace over the course of three months, it was found that after exposing them to VibroAcoustic therapy over the course of three months that there was an 80 percent decrease in anxiety levels.

  • Vibracoustic Therapy more often than not leads to a slowed heart rate and thus an improved heart rate variability (HRV), which is an indicator of stress resilience.

  • Vibroacoustic treatments have shown time and time again to increase circulation, which nourishes the cells and organs of the body.

  • Vibroacoustic sound therapy has been shown to reduce symptoms of ADD/ADHD in children with profound and multiple learning difficulties as well as in the elderly in long-term residential care.

  • Other benefits of Vibroacoustic therapy include blood flow stimulation (making pressure sores and ulcers heal faster), swelling reduction, as well as muscle and back alleviation and joint improvement.

Jupiter Medical Center

Tests with chemotherapy patients at the Jupiter Medical Center in Florida found similar results: 62.8% reduction of anxiety and 61.6% reduction of fatigue for 27 patients in 41 vibroacoustics sessions.

Duke University

A study at Duke University Medical Center also reported significant pain reduction for 20 women who underwent surgery for various cancers. Also at Duke, vibroacoustics was tested in physical therapy sessions following total knee replacements, showing that the tools helped to increase range of motion. Additionally, heart surgeons using vibroacoustics therapy during cardiac surgery recovery found significant decreases in patients’ use of sedative and pain medication, time spent on the ventilator, time spent in the cardiac unit, and overall time spent in the hospital.

Mindful Research Study

  • In a study that took 110 participants self-reporting stress levels of 4 or higher on a scale of 0-10 it was found that after spending 25 minutes on a Sound Lounge in a dimly lit room that there was a significant decrease in stress levels, with a majority of the participants saying they would recommend others to use a Sound Lounge.

  • The Sound Lounge helps induce a state of deep meditation which provides benefits similar to sleep that lower blood pressure, reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression; and allow for the onset of creative ideas.

Psychological and Physiological Transformation

Music produces alterations in physiology. Soothing music can produce a response characteristic of relaxation in which autonomic, immune, endocrine, and neuropeptide systems are altered. Likewise, it produces desired psychological responses such as reductions in anxiety and fear. Some responses have been linked to effects on the hemispheric functioning of the brain and the limbic system. High psychophysiological stress levels inhibit or block learning. Thus music can be the catalyst to facilitate mental suggestion, and enhance our own learning ability and self-healing capacities. Music is now being used in many areas of medicine including labor and delivery, ICU, CCU, surgery, dentistry, neurology, psychiatry, gerontology, rehabilitation, oncology, pain and stress management, and many others.

International Studies

International studies continue to attest to the effectiveness of VibroAcoustic Therapy as an intervention for clinical populations in the treatment of cancer, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, migraine headaches, gastrointestinal ulcers, Raynaud’s disease, Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, polyarthritis, sports injury, low back pain, neck and shoulder pain, autism, insomnia, depression, and anxiety disorders.

Interviews and Testimonials

Massage therapists have found consistent themes in the use of sound tables in the way they assist in enhancing therapies by encouraging muscles, facial and connective tissues to relax more quickly, consequently increasing the depth and duration of massage effects. They often note a reduction in their physical effort, as the sound table is like having an extra set of hands. In addition, enthusiastic clients have a high return rate and spread positive word-of-mouth that increases the client base

These are but a few of the many studies on vibroacoustics. Many point to the effectiveness of the therapy in triggering the Relaxation Response. Physiologically, the relaxation response initiates the following changes:

• Reduces oxygen consumption
• Decreases blood pressure
• Slows heart rate
• Slows respiration rate
• Relaxes muscles

Mentally, deep relaxation:
• Changes brain wave frequencies (generally slowing down from beta to alpha and alpha to theta or delta)
• Clears the mind from anxiety
• Creates a feeling of calm and peacefulness

As an additional benefit, vibroacoustics can help people to learn to recognize the state of relaxation and, over time, become able to reach relaxation at will. Vibroacoustics is a great way to learn how to relax and develop relaxation as a daily habit!
